BIG IDEAS: LEARNING TARGETS....
READING: I CAN... compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, determine meaning of unknown words using a variety of context clues, sequence text using steps in a process, determine different parts of a story, identify text features, and determine main/central idea and give supporting details, recount/retell, tell point of view

WRITING: I CAN...apply capitalization rules to my writing, use correct end punctuation marks in my writing, and use a resource to check my spelling, and research by finding a topic, search and gather information from multiple sources, and sort relevant information into categories about the topic.

MATH: I CAN... tell and write the time to 5 minutes, solve word problems by using a variety of strategies, find patterns, , create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs, identify and write the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s, mentally add and subtract 10 or 100, identify odd and even numbers, and count within 1000, measure different objects using inches and centimeters

SOCIAL STUDIES: I CAN... learn to read a map, create a map key and put it to use.

SPELLING: I CAN... spell words correctly in my writing, use resources to help me spell correctly, and find patterns in words

Week of May 23

READING:
We are reading a story called the "Gardener". We are working on vocabulary, discussing the genre: realistic fiction, working on mood, making inferencing, setting and picture walks to help tell the story. We will read this for 2 weeks.  Ask them about it! Keep reading nightly and record on the Reading Calendar to be turned in on Monday in the Red Folders. Remember to read for AT LEAST 15 minutes on 4 separate nights....HAPPY READING! ")
WRITING:
We are working on writing sentences with lots of adverbs and adjectives this week. We also continue to work on editing for spelling errors, capitalization, and endmarks. We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday and Squiggles every Wednesday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories.  The kids LOVE winning Squiggle Puppy...We look for GREAT details, CORRECT capitalization and punctuation, and a great story! :)

MATH:
We also are continuing to do multiplication and using patterns to help us figure out problems.We have learned 2 new ways to solve multiplication problems. We have learned partial products and lattice multiplication. PLEASE continue studying MULTIPLICATION FACTS AT HOME...we are going to be starting our timed tests again. This time we will "earn" an ice cream sundae party. For each fact mastered, they earn a part of the sundae! A GREAT site to practice and even take tests right on the computer is multiplication.com.  
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are studying about our community. We have discussions about the 3 types of communities: rural, suburban, and urban, learn what resources are in our community, and how our community has changed over time. Be looking for an interview that your child be asking you to participate in to help us learn about communities. We will also over the next 3 weeks be making a Sunbury brochure and a brochure about a different country to compare and contrast different communities.
HANDWRITING:

Week of May 2

READING:
We are continuing to read  "Tornado". We are working on vocabulary, discussing the genre: realistic fiction, working on mood, making inferencing, and author's craft (flashbacks).  Ask them about it! We are working on writing compound sentences this week. We also continue to work on editing for spelling errors, capitalization, and endmarks. We also are continuing to do multiplication and using patterns to help us figure out problems. PLEASE continue studying MULTIPLICATION FACTS AT HOME...we are finishing our timed tests. A GREAT site to practice and even take tests right on the computer is multiplication.com.  We are also working on continuing patterns in multiplication and PRACTICING for the OAA testing!
HEALTH: (Miss Beeker's class)
We are learning about how to be safety smart with lessons about indoor safety, outdoor safety, injury prevention, emergencies, first aid, and violence prevention. Look for a packet to come home to help your child create a fire safety escape plan for your house. We will be putting together safety booklets as well. Our unit test will take place on May 13th.
