BIG IDEAS: LEARNING TARGETS....
READING: I CAN... compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, determine meaning of unknown words using a variety of context clues, sequence text using steps in a process, determine different parts of a story, identify text features, and determine main/central idea and give supporting details, recount/retell, tell point of view

WRITING: I CAN...apply capitalization rules to my writing, use correct end punctuation marks in my writing, and use a resource to check my spelling, and research by finding a topic, search and gather information from multiple sources, and sort relevant information into categories about the topic.

MATH: I CAN... tell and write the time to 5 minutes, solve word problems by using a variety of strategies, find patterns, , create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs, identify and write the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s, mentally add and subtract 10 or 100, identify odd and even numbers, and count within 1000, measure different objects using inches and centimeters

SOCIAL STUDIES: I CAN... learn to read a map, create a map key and put it to use.

SPELLING: I CAN... spell words correctly in my writing, use resources to help me spell correctly, and find patterns in words

Week of Dec.1st- Dec.10th

READING:We are going to read the story called  "The Ugly Vegetable". A fun story about a girl growing a vegetable garden with her mother.  We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, drawing conclusions, and questioning. In grammar, we are working on proper nouns. We are focusing this story on reading with expression and accuracy.

WRITING:
We are writing to inform with this story. We are also working on writing summary paragraphs. We have been working on personal narratives in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing  creative stories and adding more detail. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We are creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our pre-writes. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. 
SPELLING: 
There will be no spelling test this week ....words will ALWAYS be placed in the Red Folder for the week. The test will be on Wed., DECEMBER 10th. On the weeks that we do not take a test, we are still working on spelling and the patterns that are created in words. There will be a pretest every other week on Wednesdays.
If your child is on a challenge list... make sure you check the Red Folder for the word list. Please keep one list at home on the fridge, and the other in the Red Folder for us to use at school. Thanks!
MATH:
We are beginning Unit 4. The main focus is on Addition and Subtraction with double digit numbers. Try to have your child log in to MOBY MAX to work on math facts. We are also using Fun4yourbrain website for practicing addition and subtraction. Please continue to work on money and identifying coins!
HEALTH:
We are learning about the food guide pyramid and how to make healthy choices for our lives. We are also learning about how exercise can help us to stay healthy and fit!

READING:We are going to read the story called  "Building Animal Homes". A nonfiction story about animals and where they live.  We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, text features, and questioning. In grammar, we are working on more singular and plural nouns. We are focusing this story on reading with expression.

We are writing to inform with this story. We are also writing our first research report on the 50's! We have been working on personal narratives in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing  creative stories. We are learning about safety and how it applies to our lives. The topics covered are injury prevention, indoor and outdoor safety, emergencies, and first aid. The students will work on a fire escape plan for their homes. We will be completing our unit with a safety brochure with all activities included.

READING:We are going to read the story  "Aero and Officer Mike". It is a story about a policeman and his working canine.   We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, story structure, visualizing, and summarizing. We will be learning to identify the main idea and details in the story. We will be working with Venn diagrams. In grammar, we are working on pronouns and verb agreement.

We will choose our biography topic when we go to the library on Wed. March 5th. We will learn how to research and write a report. We will also make notecards with key facts to share in an oral presentation on the person that we pick.  We continue to work on writing  creative stories. READING:We are going to read the story  "Yonder Mountain". It is a story about a Cherokee Legend.  We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, story structure, visualizing, and comparing and contrasting. We will be comparing two different tribes and their traditions. We will be working with Venn diagrams. In grammar, we are working on idioms, and more proper nouns. 
WRITING:
We will be reading several books with idioms and creating our own book of idioms and the funny ways we interpret sayings! We continue to work on writing  creative stories. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! Week of Jan. 21st - Jan. 31th

READING:We are going to read the story  "The Science Fair". It is a story about facing a challenge to help us to grow. We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, story structure, and visualizing. The students are going to learn what kind of challenges are involved in doing science experiments and presenting it in a science fair. We will also be doing our own experiments as well! In grammar, we are working on homophones, idioms, and more proper nouns. 
WRITING:
We will be reading several books with idioms and creating our own book of idioms and the funny ways we interpret sayings! We continue to work on writing  creative stories. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We are creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. Week of January 6-17th

READING:We are going to read the story  "Jump" It is a story about the life of Michael Jordan. We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, fact and opinion, and main idea. The students are learning about the hard work it takes to accomplish a goal.  In grammar, we are working on plural nouns. 
WRITING:
 We are currently working to write creative stories. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories this week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it!
