BIG IDEAS: LEARNING TARGETS....
READING: I CAN... compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, determine meaning of unknown words using a variety of context clues, sequence text using steps in a process, determine different parts of a story, identify text features, and determine main/central idea and give supporting details, recount/retell, tell point of view

WRITING: I CAN...apply capitalization rules to my writing, use correct end punctuation marks in my writing, and use a resource to check my spelling, and research by finding a topic, search and gather information from multiple sources, and sort relevant information into categories about the topic.

MATH: I CAN... tell and write the time to 5 minutes, solve word problems by using a variety of strategies, find patterns, , create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs, identify and write the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s, mentally add and subtract 10 or 100, identify odd and even numbers, and count within 1000, measure different objects using inches and centimeters

SOCIAL STUDIES: I CAN... learn to read a map, create a map key and put it to use.

SPELLING: I CAN... spell words correctly in my writing, use resources to help me spell correctly, and find patterns in words

Week of December 4- December 21

READING:We are going to work on a THEMED unit for Christmas for the next week and a half. We are reading about the different holidays celebrated around the world. We will be comparing and contrasting these groups, writing about the different celebrations, creating maps of the countries, and we will be making crafts from these countries. 

WRITING:
We will are working on creative stories in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing creative stories. We are starting to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We are creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our pre-writes. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. 
SPELLING: 
There will be no spelling test for the next two weeks. We are working on themed words for our unit, but will not be testing the students. 
MATH:
We are working this week on addition facts, subtraction and patterns, also working place value when addition and subtraction. Still continue working on adding coins and identifying them and their amounts. Addition and Subtraction skills will be worked on daily. We are working on  problem solving.We are also counting to 1000, skip counting, working on graphs, and looking for patterns.
SS:
We are learning map skills and how to read a compass rose and map key. We are creating our own islands with their own personal touches and creating a map key.
HANDWRITING: 
We are working on our letter formation for print. Please check the red folder for practice sheets coming home to extend learning and practice of handwriting skills.

August 21st - September 1st

READING:We will begin reading the story  "Henry and Mudge". It is a story about a boy and his dog  and what kind of activities they like to do together.    We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, story structure, sequence, and compare and contrasting. We will be working with Venn diagrams. In grammar, we are working on subjects and predicates. 
WRITING:
We will be working on personal narratives in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing  creative stories. SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are learning about making responsible and respectful choices to become a good citizen.

May 24th through August 15th

READING: Read as much as you can!!! As Mrs. Castiglione says.."Exercise your brain! It's a muscle too!"  
WRITING:
Write in you journal about all the summer activities you do. Check for a good paragraph. Beginning, middle and end.Read and write about what you read.  
SPELLING: 
PRACTICE SPELLING EVERYTHING!! Try to learn a new word every week. Practice writing and proof reading. Spelling City is a great resource!
MATH:
 Try to have your child log in to MOBY MAX to work on math facts. We are also continuing to review all concepts learned so far this year and problem solving. Continue to watch for HOMELINKS coming home in the Red Folder to work on and return. We are also using Fun4yourbrain website for practicing addition and subtraction. Please continue to work on money and identifying coins!

February 27th - March 17th

READING: The past week and the next couple we will be working on fairy tales, folktales and fables. We will be exploring traditional tales as well as reversed perspective stories. We will also compare the differences between the versions of the tales. Such as "Stone Soup"....the first version we read was set in France and the second version is set in China. We will be comparing and contrasting the character traits, story setting, plot and the lessons/morals we learn.  During phonics we will be practicing verbs and how to change them to past or present. The students should be able to describe characteristics of each genre and be able to identify them after listening. 
WRITING:
We will are working on creative stories in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing creative stories. We are starting to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! SPELLING: 
The spelling test will be on Friday, March 10th. The spelling words should be in the red folder. The words are: free, teach, teeth, please, beach, wheel, team, speak, sneeze, sheep, meaning, weave, eat, read, between and reason.
MATH:
We have concluded our unit on measurement and started the next unit on story problems. The students will be able to analyze, answer and explain the story problem. Most problems will be adding 4, 2 digit numbers (ie. 12+23+34+12=). The measurement of time and money will be included in indpenedent work time as well as Sumdog to ensure the students maintain their growth. We will still continue working on adding coins and identifying them and their amounts. Addition and Subtraction skills will be worked on daily. We are working on  problem solving. We are also counting to 1000, skip counting, working on graphs, and looking for patterns.
Science: 
We are learning about different animal habitats and how animals can change our environment. We will be doing an animal project in the next few weeks, so look for information to come home.

Week of Jan 23 - Feb. 4th

READING: The story we are reading is called "How Chipmunk got His Stripes". This is a folktale and also teaches an important lesson (be kind and don't brag or be boastful). We will be comparing and contrasting the character traits of the two main characters, writing about the different traits, as well as identifying facts and opinions in our reading. During phonics we will be practicing verbs and how to change them to past or present.

We are starting a new unit on measurement. The measurement of time and money will be included as well as standard and nonstandard forms of measurement. Still continue working on adding coins and identifying them and their amounts. Addition and Subtraction skills will be worked on daily. We are working on  problem solving.We are also counting to 1000, skip counting, working on graphs, and looking for patterns.
Health: 
We have began talking about all kinds of safety. The students are working on internet safety, bike safety, car safety, learning about street signs, and fire safety.

Weeks of Jan. 3rd to Jan. 13th

READING:We are reading the non fiction piece, "Super Storms". We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, main idea and details to support the main idea and visualization. We are working on verbs, compound words and digraphs (wh, th, & sh) in Grammar. 


WRITING:
We are writing informational paragraphs. We are starting to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We are creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. SPELLING: 
The new spelling list went home on Tuesday, Jan. 3rd  for Mrs. Priestas' kiddos. (If you need a list please contact Mrs. Priestas or Mrs. Yousey as students do not all have the same list. :) Mrs. Yousey continues to practice sounds and spelling patterns. MATH:
We are working on addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will continue to work on money and time. We will start next week on measurement and identifying the different tools we need to use for measurement We are working on  problem solving, place value and greater than less than.We are also counting to 1000, skip counting, identifying coins, working on graphs, and looking for patterns.
HEALTH:
We are learning about safety: fire safety, internet safety, car safety, safety signs, being safe at school and at home, etc....
