Weeks of Feb. 16-Feb. 29th

READING: The past week and the next couple we will be working on fairy tales, folktales and fables. We will be exploring traditional tales as well as reversed perspective stories. We will also compare the differences between the versions of the tales. Such as "Stone Soup"....the first version we read was set in France and the second version is set in China. We will be comparing and contrasting the character traits, story setting, plot and the lessons/morals we learn.  During phonics we will be practicing verbs and how to change them to past or present. The students should be able to describe characteristics of each genre and be able to identify them after listening.
WRITING:
We will are working on creative stories in writing and adding details to all of our writing.  We continue to work on writing creative stories. We are starting to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories each week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We are creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an end mark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our pre-writes. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. Phonics: we will be working on ea and ee words.
SPELLING:
The spelling test will be on Friday, Feb. 26th. The spelling words should be in the red folder. The words are: free, teach, teeth, please, beach, wheel, team, speak, sneeze, sheep, meaning, weave, eat, read, between and reason. **In Mrs. Yousey's class there are some individual spelling lists that are different from the list above.
MATH:
We have concluded our unit on measurement and started the next unit on story problems. The students will be able to analyze, answer and explain the story problem. Most problems will be adding 4, 2 digit numbers (ie. 12+23+34+12=). The measurement of time and money will be included in indpenedent work time as well as Sumdog or Scootpad to ensure the students maintain their growth. We will still continue working on adding coins and identifying them and their amounts. Addition and Subtraction skills will be worked on daily. We are working on  problem solving. We are also counting to 1000, skip counting, working on graphs, and looking for patterns.
Social Studies:
