BIG IDEAS: LEARNING TARGETS....
READING: I CAN... compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, determine meaning of unknown words using a variety of context clues, sequence text using steps in a process, determine different parts of a story, identify text features, and determine main/central idea and give supporting details, recount/retell, tell point of view

WRITING: I CAN...apply capitalization rules to my writing, use correct end punctuation marks in my writing, and use a resource to check my spelling, and research by finding a topic, search and gather information from multiple sources, and sort relevant information into categories about the topic.

MATH: I CAN... tell and write the time to 5 minutes, solve word problems by using a variety of strategies, find patterns, , create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs, identify and write the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s, mentally add and subtract 10 or 100, identify odd and even numbers, and count within 1000, measure different objects using inches and centimeters

SOCIAL STUDIES: I CAN... learn to read a map, create a map key and put it to use.

SPELLING: I CAN... spell words correctly in my writing, use resources to help me spell correctly, and find patterns in words

Week of DECEMBER 3rd


READING:We are reading the story  "The Science Fair". We are working on vocabulary, story structure, comprehension, using context clues, homophones, and idioms. The students are learning to look for clues in stories to find different elements in a story. We are also doing the same skills in our individual reading groups! We are also learning about idioms...be looking for our awesome idiom books coming home!!!
WRITING:
We are working on using homophones into our writing. We creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!   We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday and Squiggles every Wednesday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. The kids will be winning Squiggle Puppy in their journal writing...We look for GREAT details, CORRECT capitalization and punctuation, and a great story! :)

MATH:
We are doing lots of practice with multiplication facts and fact families. The students are learning about the Turn-around-Rule (Commutative Property) and lots of ways to solve multiplication problems. They are practicing with games and using MULTIPLICATION.COM as a great tool to practice their facts. The students are taking tests every other day and are charting their progress with ice cream incentives! They are working towards an ice cream sundae party! Please help your son/daughter study at least 15 minutes nightly with their facts. They are learning about the relationship of multiplication to repeated addition and division to repeated subtraction. We are also learning how to make multiplication arrays. The students are skip counting and finding many patterns in their multiplication facts.  Continue to watch for Homelinks to come home in the homework folder. A study packet will be coming home in the next week or so to work on these skills before CH 4 test.
HEALTH: I am teaching Mrs. Stahlman's class...
We are studying Nutrition! The kids are learning the "NEW PLATE" which is replacing the FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID to learn about the 5 food groups and the importance of eating healthy and staying active! Ask them to tell you about the nutrients we have been learning about! (and the motions that go along with them!) Also, how much water we should be drinking in a day! We will be keeping a weekly calendar of our food choice and exercises....BE READY!!!!!!Our test will be on 12/14.

WEEK of OCTOBER 28TH


READING:We are reading the story  "The Harvest Birds". We are working on vocabulary, cause and effect, comprehension, using context clues, sequence of events, and Drawing conclusions. We will be completing webs and filling in  graphic organizers. The students are learning to look for clues in stories to find the conclusions. We are also doing the same skills in our individual reading groups!
WRITING:
We are working on putting commas into our writing. We creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do our final drafts for our ABC books, our creature stories, and our creative writing stories! Come see and read about our creatures!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday and Squiggles every Wednesday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. The kids will be winning Squiggle Puppy in their journal writing...We look for GREAT details, CORRECT capitalization and punctuation, and a great story! :)

We are doing a practice with measurement this week and learning about perimeter and area. We are also measure in standard and nonstardard measurement. A study packet will be coming home in the next week or so to work on these skills before CH 3 test.

WEEK of OCTOBER 8th



READING:We are reading the story  "Max's Words". We are working on vocabulary, cause and effect, comprehension, using context clues, sequence of events, and picture clues. We will be completing webs and filling in  graphic organizers. We will be having a scavenger hunt with words in magazines, newspapers, really anywhere we can find them!!!! Then, our plan is to cut them out and create crazy sentences and stories just like Max does in the story! The kids are really excited! Have all words in by Thursday!
WRITING:
We are working on verbs in language and singular/plural nouns. We creating AWESOME fall creatures from our nature walk in the Land Lab, and now we are creating stories about our creatures! SCIENCE: 
We are studying SOIL AND PLANTS with the students. They are learning about how the soil is made up of 4 different parts...ask your child what they are!  The students are reading and working on Chapter 3. They will also be learning about the parts of plants and the life cycle of plants. We will bringing in soil samples and planting our own plants! Our test over Chapter 3(soil)/Chapter 1(plants) will be on Oct 18th. A study packet will come home on the Oct 15th.

WEEK of OCTOBER 1st


READING:We are continuing to read the story  "Roberto Clemente". We are working on vocabulary, cause and effect, comprehension, using context clues, and talking about mood and picture clues. We will be completing webs and filling in  graphic organizers. We will be practicing on MONDAY for the OAA and taking the REAL test on TUESDAY. PLEASE have students be well rested and have a great breakfast that morning!
WRITING:
We are practicing for the OAA with small packets in our classroom.  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday and Squiggles every Wednesday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. We are studying about body systems with the students. They are learning about body systems, the heart, lungs, and about the brain. The students are reading and working on Chapter 2. They will be taking all the information that they learn and applying it to small projects in class. Our test over Chapter 2 will be on Oct 3rd. A study packet will come home on the Oct 1st. Week of April 16

We will be reading a supplement book called "City Green" to do some letter writing and comparisons between the two books.  Reading calendars have CHANGED for the REST of the YEAR!!!! The students are to read a total of 4 reads every week and still turn in calendars on MONDAYS. This will get them ready for the requirements for 4th grade.

We are comparing equivalent fractions, and also learning how to write and identify mixed numerals. We are continuing to work on learning our multiplication facts. We are taking timed tests every other day. The students will have their completed tests in their homework folder each night.  Continue to watch for Homelinks to come home in the homework folder. We are learning different extensions for multiplications and learning how to use factors and fact families. Also, we are using parentheses to answer multiplication problems! The test over Chapter 7 Multiplication math extensions will be on FRIDAY. Keep working hard and start completing the study island math ribbons!

We are studying about safety with the students. They are learning about indoor safety, outdoor safety, pedestrian safety, and fire safety. The students are reading and working on Chapter 9. They will be taking all the information that they learn and applying it to a safety booklet they will create the last week of the 3 weeks together. Our test over Chapter 9 will be on April 20th. A study packet will come home on the 17th of April. Thanks for helping with the FIRE SAFETY plan for your houses!

We will also be discussing the history of money. The test will take place on the last day of our 3 week unit. (TEST for Stahlman is March 21st)

We will be learning about 3 dimensional shapes at the end of the week. Wednesday, we will be testing the student on their knowledge of geometry facts and putting their skills to the test!
