BIG IDEAS: LEARNING TARGETS....
READING: I CAN... compare and contrast, identify cause and effect, determine meaning of unknown words using a variety of context clues, sequence text using steps in a process, determine different parts of a story, identify text features, and determine main/central idea and give supporting details, recount/retell, tell point of view

WRITING: I CAN...apply capitalization rules to my writing, use correct end punctuation marks in my writing, and use a resource to check my spelling, and research by finding a topic, search and gather information from multiple sources, and sort relevant information into categories about the topic.

MATH: I CAN... tell and write the time to 5 minutes, solve word problems by using a variety of strategies, find patterns, , create a picture or bar graph to show data and solve problems using the information from the graphs, identify and write the value of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, skip count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s, mentally add and subtract 10 or 100, identify odd and even numbers, and count within 1000, measure different objects using inches and centimeters

SOCIAL STUDIES: I CAN... learn to read a map, create a map key and put it to use.

SPELLING: I CAN... spell words correctly in my writing, use resources to help me spell correctly, and find patterns in words

Week of Dec.16th-Dec. 19th

READING:We are continuing to reread the story  "Young Thomas Edison". We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, cause and effect and sequencing and main idea. The students are learning about different inventions and the hard work  behind them. We will be doing some invention extensions in the next week to help our students understand the hard work and determination it takes to invent new things.  In grammar, we are working on object pronouns. We will be creating an around the world book about how different countries celebrate the holiday season. We are also working on cause/effect, sequencing, summarizing and detailed creative writing using the classic story of The Grinch! Look for their projects to come home for the holidays.

WRITING:
 We are currently working to write creative stories. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories this week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. The kids will be winning Squiggle Puppy in their journal writing...We look for GREAT details, CORRECT capitalization and punctuation, and a great story! :)
SPELLING: 
There will not be a spelling test this week ....words will ALWAYS be placed in the agenda for the week. Test will always be every other WED.

MATH:
We are working in CH7 and CH9 with multiplication and patterns. We just finished our exploration of fact extensions!! We will be working with fact families.The students will be learning how to use arrays to help solve multiplication problems. We will also be finishing timed multiplication tests. Check the agenda nightly to see what test your child is currently taking.  Continue to watch for HOMELINKS coming home weekly to work on and return. Please continue to study math facts nightly even though we are not signing our blue multiplication facts paper. We will be using our knowledge daily! :)
SCIENCE: 
We are learning about rocks and minerals. Over the next few weeks we will be exploring different types of rocks and their characteristics and how erosion affects the change in rocks. There will be NO TEST for this unit. :)

Week of Nov 13 - Nov 22

READING:We are going to  read the story  "Kamishibai Man". We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, cause and effect and sequencing. The students are learning about different Japanese stories and the meanings behind them. We will be doing some Japanese extensions in the next week to help our students appreciate other cultures.  In grammar, we are working on dictionary skills. We continue to work on our ABC verb books to share with our Kindergarten reading buddies. 

WRITING:
We are working on our final drafts of our Luckily/Unluckily books. They are going to be published this week with the help of Ms. Norris! We are currently working to write creative stories. We continue to be creative in our SQUIGGLE stories this week. This is  where the students receive a squiggle mark, then have to draw something using the squiggle and then write about it! We creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects!  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday. We are working on vocabulary, comprehension, drawing conclusions and inferencing. The students are learning about different folktales and the meanings behind them.  In grammar, we are working on using commas in our sentences and using commas in a series. We continue to work on our ABC verb books to share with our Kindergarten reading buddies.

We are currently doing a scavenger hunt through our TIME FOR KIDS to find different text features.  In grammar, we are working on verbs and verb tenses. We are making ABC verb books to share with our Kindergarten reading buddies.

Week of October 7th

READING:We continue to read the story  "Roberto Clemente". We are working on vocabulary, character traits, comprehension, and cause and effect. The students are learning to identify different character traits and how characters affect a story. We are working on a baseball project which is due on Tuesday. They are each researching a baseball player and presenting their information on a jersey that they design. In grammar, we are working on plural nouns. Also, we are learning how cause is related to the effect in the story. We are taking the OAA TEST on TUESDAY, OCT. 8th. Make sure your child has plenty of sleep the night before and a good breakfast! They may bring a snack and water bottle and a small stuffed animal for the test. NO STRESS....JUST DO YOUR BEST! :)

We are learning about different soils, parts of soils, how to conserve soil, plant adaptations to different environments, and the plants parts and importance of each. We will have a guest speaker from the Delaware Co. Soil and Conservation Dept. Dona Rhea. The students will get to experience all kinds of hands on projects with this unit. We will need each student to bring in a baggie of soil. The test for SOIL only will be on Friday, Oct. 11th. We will do plant projects through the 17th.

In grammar, we are working on sentence fragments and run on sentences. Also, we are reviewing types of sentences: statements, questions, commands.

We are also doing the same skills in our individual reading groups! We are working on nonfiction features in a text and we are starting to work on nonfiction book reports! They are going to share their information in poster format that they are working on during their center time. 
WRITING:
We are currently working on compound words and continuing to write creative stories. We creating  some awesome writing in our journals and we are exciting to do so many writing projects! We are currently working on our own versions of the popular "DOGZILLA" story.  We continue to work on writing Weekend Reports every Monday and Squiggles every Wednesday. We are focusing on writing a complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and an endmark. We are also learning to use graphic organizers to help with our prewrites. With every sentence we write, we try to think of one good detail sentence to add to our stories. The kids will be winning Squiggle Puppy in their journal writing...We look for GREAT details, CORRECT capitalization and punctuation, and a great story! :)
SPELLING: 
There is no spelling test this week....words will come out Thursday for next Wednesday's test (March 20th)

MATH:
We are doing lots of practice with multiplication facts and fact extensions. The students are learning about the Turn-around-Rule (Commutative Property) and lots of ways to solve multiplication problems. They are practicing with games and using MULTIPLICATION.COM as a great tool to practice their facts. The students are still working on HOME MATH practice packets and earning their weekly MATH BUCKS! Please help your son/daughter study at least 15 minutes nightly with their facts. They are learning about the relationship of multiplication to repeated addition and division to repeated subtraction. We are also learning how to make multiplication arrays. The students are skip counting and finding many patterns in their multiplication facts.  Continue to watch for Homelinks to come home in the homework folder. A study packet will be coming home in the next week or so to work on these skills before CH 7 Multiplication test. We will then move on to FRACTIONS!
SCIENCE:
We are studying forces and motion! The kids are learning all about force, motion, gravity, speed, work, and weight. We will be doing a variety of experiments to test gravity and motion...along with learning about simple machines. Look for a test over forces and motion before spring break next week. There will be a small study packet and they may use their books to show what they know!!!!

HANDWRITING:
We are currently working on practicing our lower and upper letters in cursive! They are doing great! They really want to write everything in cursive! We are working hard to form all of our letters correctly!
